A sad end to a beloved series. Over the last 20 years or so I had read a few of the "Cat Who..." books, in no particular order, and enjoyed all of them. A few months ago I started buying the paperbacks, and read the whole series in order. If you have read and enjoyed her other books in the series, you will probably want to read this one, but be forewarned, it is a disappointment. This might be the first mystery book I've read where nothing gets solved, things just...happen, and there is no resolution at all. A very disjointed narrative, and a lot of it just doesn't make sense. As you probably know by now, if you were a fan of the series, that this is the last book. I'm given to understand that she was working on another book, with the working title of "The Cat Who Smelled Smoke" but it apparently was not far enough along to be published when she passed away. If you are a die-hard "Cat Who" fan, I can't imagine you not reading it, simply because it is the last book in the series, but if you are a more casual fan, go for one of her earlier books. I have read this series many times and have always loved it. When I discovered there was a final book, I had to have closure. Ms Braun has passed and there will be no more. Who really wrote this travesty? There was little dialogue, no real plot , and to break up Qwill and Polly in that manner was an insult to all who loved those characters. It did not tie up loose ends, it was an insult!
I am a huge fan of Jackson Braun, but this one wasn't "catty'! The mystery wasn't there in this novel. It just didn't have anything to arouse my interests and when I got to the end, I actually had to go back through some chapters to see if I had mistakenly jumped ahead and missed some action in the story. Qwilleran and Koko seemed to have no involvement in solving any mystery. I got this book free through Bookbub, so I am relieved I didn't pay for it!

I know this series is popular, and have read two of the other books. This one is terrible. It reads like an unfinished, very rough, disjointed draft--complete with what seem like the author's notes and reminders to herself--and, after meandering around for a while, comes to an abrupt end without resolving any of the three or four mysteries.
I wondered while I was reading this book if it could be a counterfeit. It doesn't have the flow of previous books. It also sets up Mysteries and leaves them hanging. Was the woman who was stung by the bee murdered? Who are the arsonist? There is no resolution. If the home You Love Is On Fire why wouldn't you go to the scene? Or, why wouldn't you say how bad the damaged bus. I found this book to be below the very high standard of Lillian Braun books. I was surprised when the book suddenly ended. I've read many books in this series because they are satisfying and logical. I was disappointed this time. I am curious to know the fate of Polly but appalled with the tepid reaction of Qwilleran. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone but I would recommend the other books in this series.
I dont get it. No ending to any issues in this book...everything is left hanging! The murder of the young bee girl, the barn burn(!!), Polly moving away all-of-a-sudden, and Quill seems not to care...etc! PHOOEY! I wanna know where the second half of this book is. (
This is book #29 in "The Cat Who..." series by Lillian Jackson Braun. This book is obviously done by someone who just wanted to end the series and took the easy way out. I have NEVER been so disappointed in one of Mrs Brauns' books as I am in this particular one. The last several books in her "Cat Who..." series weren't her best work, but were individually ok as mysteries. This one shows a lack of respect for those of us who bought all her books and supported her writing. Why didn't the publishers just have Qwill kill Santa Claus, write a column in his newspaper telling kids the Easter bunny died, and the Tooth Fairy is the boogieman! What a rotten way to treat your 'customers'.
I do not believe Lilian Jackson Braun wrote this book. Her style was captivating, humorous, and her plot lines and characters were always well-developed. This was a disjointed, meandering, pointless mess. To hear that Qwill's magnificent home burned down and he, a newspaper man didn't even visit the site or demand an investigation is unthinkable. A murder happened, maybe, and did not get investigated or resolved. His long-time companion left the country and gave away her beloved cats? I don't think so. Then the book just stopped. It didn't end; there was no resolution, no conclusion; it just stopped. Whoever really wrote this did a really lousy job. I have enjoyed all Ms. Braun's books but this one is just hopelessly awful.
