I'm really ambivalent. On one hand, this might be the best book in the thriller genre that I've read (out of hundreds or maybe thousands). . Brilliant plot, entirely real characters. Frighteningly evil villains. Author's sensibility is serious, intelligent, thought-provoking. Incredibly suspenseful, creepy. Totally engaging. SPOILER ALERT STARTING HERE. Yet, much of the book's brilliance has to do with an inevitable tragic ending, foreshadowed from the first page, that....doesn't happen. The author chooses to wind things up with a nimble and unlikely sidestep, with smiles all around. I don't think that I've ever rated a 'genre' novel above 3 stars. This one is a literary surprise that would have rated 5 stars from me if the author hadn't backed off.Tags : Shadow Woman (Jane Whitefield) [Thomas Perry] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I have read other books by this author, but this character just doesn't grab me.
As with all the other Jane Whitefield books, this one is a winner. Good plot, good characters, action and excellent writing. I'm reading all the JW books again since I read them before the kindle. When you're done with Jane, read Perry's other books.
Thomas Perry has constructed a non-stop action and chase novel, and one where the prey and hunters are equally dangerous. He juggles four viewpoints among those on the bad guy team, and three or four on the good guy team. This is in stark contrast to the one-on-one structure of Vanishing Act.
Even though I have never liked the Jane and Carey marriage, where he gets to live exactly as he always has, and she is supposed to transform herself into a 1950 style Stepford wife whose only priority is to support and nurture all his needs.
I like it because of the cool way the run started, and because of the truth in the Western chase scenes likening the limited road choices to cattle chute pens. And the beauty and rugged quality of the scenery. Next to Zion National Park, Glacier National is my favorite, with the Smokies in 3rd place.
Perry also manages to make the runner likeable without the "automatic" of using a child as in Dance for the Dead.
The magician who aids the escape reminds me of two more of my favorites - the old TV show Stingray where his help will cost you a favor later, and the cool You Tube Penn & Teller videos - especially the fish.
Like this author, and some of his books are better than others. liked this one a lot!
This is the third Jane Whitefield book and is engrossing and enjoyable throughout. Strongly recommend this book. Good plot and strong characters. Couldn't put it down...
Thomas Perry's SHADOW WOMAN sets Jane Whitefield against two hunters who are out to kill Pete Hatcher.
Pete is a likeable young man who has learned too much about the operation of his employers. Three men operate a Las Vegas casino, but are skimming from the take for various enterprises including providing funds to politicians for favors.
Months into her marriage Jane is again in the field to save Pete's life, but at each turn she takes a hunter arrives to block her path. The pace is fast and furious as Jane fights to save her life, and her marriage.
Nash Black, author of SANDPRINTS OF DEATH.
The Jane Whitefield series is one of my favorites. I would love to have more! All of them fascinate me with the ties to Indian lifestyle and the explanation of how she does the job she does. I read and re-read them. I read them in "real" book form and now read and re-read them digitally.
